DIY Teeth Whitening That Actually Work!

by Out and About STYLE Mag

No one appreciates bad teeth. It’s not just about you but your entire personality. Moreover, it’s a dead giveaway of your health and hygiene. Teeth are affected by a lot of things: smoking, eating and drinking, etc., but if you don’t brush them frequently, the stains become long-term and unappealing.
From the dreaded dentist’s appointment to various products and procedures, all have their benefits but come with high costs and sometimes pain, too.

However, if you are not blessed with naturally white teeth, have abused them to a yellow appeal and wish to whiten them with something quick and easy, we’ve put together a few DIY teeth whitening hacks that actually work. These hacks serve as good runner- ups for professional whitening treatments and will brighten your smile with continued usage. Because as Dr Seuss says, “Teeth are always in fashion.” We agree with that 100%.

Getting Started

Before trying out these hacks, make sure you take proper care of your teeth and include daily brushing for these methods to work. Don’t try all the hacks at the same time, try one, and if it suits you, stick to it.
If your teeth are in poor health or too sensitive, consult a doctor before trying out these natural treatments.

Activated Charcoal Powder

We’re not talking about the blackened ashes found in barbecue pits. Activated charcoal is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to naturally whiten your teeth. It is an antioxidant that not only removes surface stains left by tea, coffee, and food consumption but scrubs away toxins as well.
Dip a clean, wet toothbrush into a charcoal powder container and brush your teeth as you usually do. Don’t let the sight of your now blackened teeth alarm you because the blackness helps to neutralise their yellow appearance and rinses away to reveal brighter, whiter teeth.
The grainy texture of activated charcoal can corrode your tooth enamel. Make sure your toothbrush is wet enough or make a paste with charcoal, use gentle motions while brushing and limit this to only once a week. A black toothpaste is even better and less harsh.

Coconut Oil

Apart from coconut oil being a miracle worker for our hair and body, it’s great for naturally whitening teeth, too. Have you ever heard of oil-pulling? No? Basically, it involves taking a spoonful of coconut oil in your clean mouth and swishing it for five minutes or even 20! But only if you can swish around it for that long!
Oil-pulling improves gum health, removes bad breath and eliminates harmful bacteria as well. In other words, it is ideal for promoting oral hygiene. Though, if you feel like oil-swishing is not for you use coconut oil with your toothbrush and brush your teeth to get whiter teeth.
This procedure isn’t a threat to your tooth enamel. Instead, it prolongs its health. So, try this whenever you feel the need.

Milk Powder

The more calcium intake, the whiter and stronger your teeth will be. Tooth enamel is made up of calcium, and you must eat more dairy products to keep it in good health. However, if you have cut dairy from your diet due to going vegan or any other health-related reasons, try milk powder to whiten teeth.
Yes, you heard us! Combine your toothpaste with a little bit of milk powder (not a whitener) and brush your teeth with it to spruce up your pearly whites. Do this twice a week!

Turmeric

Turmeric has antioxidant, anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties. Plus, it has scientifically proven health benefits to its name. Apart from that, it works wonders for teeth whitening as well.
Use a little bit of water and turmeric powder to make a paste. Use that paste to brush your teeth for two minutes. Rinse the turmeric; it will leave a stain, so do another brush with just your toothpaste.

It will effectively whiten and lighten the coffee/tea stains. Due to its anti-inflammatory qualities, it’s great for natural dental care as well. Do this three times a week to enhance the whiteness of your teeth.

Baking Soda and Lemon

Baking soda is a common ingredient used for various cleaning purposes. However, we find baking soda and lemon a tad too harsh for teeth whitening. To tone down the sensitivity of this formula, mix baking soda and lemon with your usual toothpaste. Use your toothbrush to form a smooth, slightly runny paste to break down the grains in baking soda.
Once the paste is formed, gently brush your teeth, and this mixture will zap surface stains. Limit this to only once a week.

Foods and Teeth Offenders

Foods that require a lot of chewing act as teeth whiteners because they naturally clean surface stains by increasing saliva production, which serves as a natural teeth cleaning agent. These foods are called fibrous foods such as apple, celery, cabbage, carrots, etc. Apart from cleaning, they also rid the mouth of bacteria and bad breath as well.

Furthermore, eat fruits rich in citric acid (oranges, pineapples), and malic acid (strawberries) that have proven to be one of the easiest ways to achieve that white, flashing smile. Strawberries can also be mashed up, and you can rub the paste on your teeth for five minutes to give your teeth a good cleanse and reveal whiter teeth.

Now, onto the teeth offenders. There’s no gain without pain! And the pain comes when you have to forbid yourself from things you love! A few of those things would be coffee, tea, wine, and fizzy drinks that have a tremendous effect on your teeth, especially if you drink them frequently or a bit too excessively! If you want teeth, that are blinding, you need to keep a lid on these beverages.

Instead, consume lots of water, lemonade, citrus fruit drinks, and milk! This will improve your gums, general health, and rid your body of toxins.
